mild climate
Pierre Bonnard
seven hills
Le Cannet is known above all for its climate, mild enough to earn it the nickname the Madeira of France, and for the painter Pierre Bonnard, who made his home here and whose name lives on in the Musée Bonnard.
The town lies just north of Cannes, about two kilometres from the Mediterranean, and the two form a single urban area. Le Cannet was itself part of Cannes until the late eighteenth century. Pine-covered hills shelter it, seven of them, from Le Pézou to Les Bréguières, and they give the town a microclimate with little humidity and hardly any frost even in winter. From the heights the view reaches the Lérins islands and, further off, the Esterel. Among the streets that climb those hills you find the Tour des Danys and the Chapelle Bellini, and the dramatist Victorien Sardou and the accordionist Richard Galliano were both born here.
Picture the line of the Via Aurelia, the Roman road that ran from Arles to Rome, still traceable across the hillsides, with the sea glinting below.
