Le Blanc-Mesnil was born during the French Revolution, when a third of the territory of Aulnay was detached on a December day to make a new commune. Its name is far older: recorded in the eleventh century as Mansionile Blaun, it means 'little houses' that were white or shining. Some see the flour dust from the old windmills in it, others read blanc as 'free', for villagers released from serfdom. Nobody has settled the question.
The Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace sits just next door at Le Bourget, and its collection, from the Concorde Sierra Delta to the Airbus A380 MSN4 (F-WWDD), belongs to the local horizon. The town lies between Charles de Gaulle and Le Bourget airports, a short RER B ride from Paris, with business parks such as Paris Nord II and the head offices of Forclum and Sicli. Between the Morée and the Molette, the Parc de Ladoucette offers a greener corner.
If those two little rivers were the edges of your childhood, here they are, with the whole town in between.
