Where does a name like Łaziska come from? It recalls the old "łazy", patches of forest burned to clear land for farming, long before anyone here thought of coal.
What makes the town unusual is that it is really three. Łaziska Średnie, the oldest settlement, Łaziska Dolne and, last of all, Łaziska Górne on the surrounding hills were all folded into one town that took only the youngest name. Coal was found here in 1779, and mines, industry and railway lines followed, so that by the 19th century the farming villages had become part of the industrial heart of Upper Silesia. The Muzeum Energetyki tells that story, the Hałda Skalny rises as a reminder of it, and a small Wagonik z węglem sits in town as a monument to the miners. In 1913 the Polish choir "Echo" was founded here, one of the oldest in the region.
The town lies on the southern edge of the Katowice Upland, just south of Katowice, with fields and woods around it. However far you roam, Łaziska Górne is where you belong.
