Known for

Lakes and forests

On the rock face at Saraakallio, red figures of deer, people and boats have been painted in a mixture of iron-rich earth, the largest Stone Age rock painting site anywhere in Fennoscandia. Laukaa, the municipality next door to Jyväskylä, has kept them for thousands of years.

Home in Laukaa tends to mean water. Lievestuoreenjärvi, Kuusvesi and Leppävesi spread across the map, and three locks of the Keitele Canal, at Kuusa, Kuhankoski and Kapeenkoski, carry boats between Päijänne and Keitele. The coat of arms shows a red heart with a green conifer growing from it, a nod to the forests and to a place that sees itself in the heart of Finland. Laukaa is an old mother parish too: Jyväskylä itself once belonged to it. Kirkkomuseo and Kotiseutumuseo Kalluntalo hold on to that past.

Whether your Laukaa is the church village, Lievestuore, Leppävesi or Vihtavuori, this map is yours to wear and to explain to anyone who asks.
