Debt-free town
Further Moor
Between Düsseldorf and Cologne
At the St.-Martinus-Kirche in Richrath, archaeologists found a bone that radiocarbon dating placed in the year 796, which suggests the old villages here are far older than anyone had assumed. Langenfeld itself is much younger: it was formed from Richrath and Reusrath and became a town in 1948.
Its claim to fame is unusual for a German town. Langenfeld paid off its entire public debt, and the debt clock that had hung at the town hall was taken down and handed on to Grevenbroich; the achievement was marked with a party for residents under the slogan "Golden Times". The town lies between Düsseldorf and Cologne on the river terraces east of the Rhine, yet has no direct access to the river itself, and small brooks carry its water away instead.
The Schalenschneider-Kotten and the quiet paths of the Further Moor show a gentler side of a commuter town best known for its accounts. Anyone who has walked there knows that Langenfeld is more than its finances.
