Known for

three towns in one

Lamezia Terme is a young city with old parts. It was created by joining three separate towns, Nicastro, Sambiase and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia, which now live on as its districts, and it takes its name from the river Amato, once called Lametos, and from the sulphur baths of Caronte.

The city lies near the middle of Calabria, at the western end of the isthmus of Catanzaro, the narrowest strip of land on the Italian peninsula. Its territory runs from a stretch of coast on the gulf of Sant'Eufemia across the plain and up into the hills. Daily life reflects that position: the region's main airport is here, along with farms, shops and industry spread across the flat land. Each district keeps its own character. Nicastro grew from a Byzantine fortress and once thrived on silk, Sambiase had baths known in Roman times, and Sant'Eufemia stands on the site linked to the Greek city of Terina.

The Museo Archeologico Lametino brings those threads together, and the Casa natale di Francesco Fiorentino honours the philosopher born in Sambiase. Wear the map and you wear all three towns at once.
