Iron Age finds
They call Laitila the egg capital of Finland, and the town wears the title proudly. Poultry farming is so central to the place that it appears on the municipal coat of arms, every summer the town holds its egg festival, Laitilan Munamarkkinat, and the local fields also grow most of the country's early carrots. Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas makes its soft drinks here too, and Highway 8 links the town with Rauma and Uusikaupunki.
Poukan talo is one of the town's museums, though Laitila's past reaches much further back. Laitila is rich in Iron Age remains, the most famous being the warrior's grave at Kodjala, and Finland's oldest glass object, a Roman-era drinking horn, was found in the village of Soukainen. The row village of Untamala, the clustered village of Suontaka and the enclosed farmhouse of Kauppila at Koukkela are all nationally significant, and two of Laitila's villages have been named Finland's village of the year. Moronhattu, Kirkkopuisto and the sculpture Elämän lähde are familiar sights around town.
On the map, Laitila is a web of village roads between fields and farmyards, the same roads everyone who grew up here cycled down on their way to school or to the egg festival.
