Napoleon's new town
the pentagon plan
Place Napoléon
La Roche-sur-Yon owes its shape to a single decision: in the spring of 1804 Napoleon made it the new prefecture of the Vendée, replacing Fontenay-le-Comte, and a small market town worn down by the Vendée wars was redrawn as a planned city. Engineers laid it out in a regular pentagon, with straight streets and imposing public buildings.
The Place Napoléon is still the centre of everyday life, a huge open square where people cross between the town hall and the Théâtre Municipal, children play and the Statue équestre de Napoléon Ier keeps watch. At the end of the long avenues the Église Saint-Louis closes the view, and the Haras de la Vendée, the stud farm, is never far from the centre. The town changed its name again and again with each new regime, becoming Napoléon, then Bourbon-Vendée, then Napoléon-Vendée, before settling back to the old one.
The river Yon runs south through it all, below the granite outcrop that gave the town its name.
