Pomesanian bishops
Vistula valley
Kwidzyn is known for its Gothic castle of the Pomesanian chapter and for a history that runs straight through the story of Prussia and Poland. The Teutonic Knights built a castle here in 1232 and founded the town of Marienwerder – 'Mary's river island' – the following year, and it soon became the seat of the Bishops of Pomesania. In 1440 the Prussian Confederation, which rose against Teutonic rule, was founded in the town, and Saint Dorothea of Montau spent her last years here, drawing pilgrims for generations.
Kwidzyn lies on the Liwa River, some 5 kilometres east of the Vistula and about 70 km south of Gdańsk, in the region of Powiśle. Its place by the great river made it a frontier and a toll point: in 1765 Prussia set up a customs chamber here for Polish goods floated down the Vistula to the Baltic ports. Polish kings Sigismund II Augustus and Stephen Báthory visited, and Stanisław Leszczyński stayed in the town in 1734.
On the map the old heart is easy to find: the Zamek Kapituły Pomezańskiej w Kwidzynie, the Kościół pw. Świętego Jana Ewangelisty and the Dawny Ratusz, with the Liwa flowing on towards the Nogat.
