Farm machinery
Kvernaland is known for farm machinery. Kverneland Group, the world's largest maker of ploughs and agricultural equipment, grew from the factory Ole Gabriel Kverneland founded here, and most of the village's factories still build equipment for farming. The village lies at the north end of the lake Frøylandsvatnet, with Foss Eikjeland and the river Figgjo just to the north and Klepp stasjon across the water to the south-west.
What people feel most is that it is one place, whatever the borders say. Kvernaland straddles Klepp and Time Municipalities, with a sliver in Sandnes; the eastern half is Orstad, the western half Frøyland. Frøyland og Orstad Church serves both, the first parish of its kind in Norway to cross a municipal boundary. Even the name divides opinion, between Kverneland, Kvernaland and the old local Kvednaland, and all three are still heard. Frøyland IL plays football, Time Bygdemuseum keeps the local past, and Øksnevadporten Station on the Jæren line stands in Orstad.
Above it all rises Brekkenuten. If that was the hill of your childhood, on whichever side of the border you grew up, Kvernaland is worth wearing.
