Tromsø neighbourhood

Kvaløysletta is known as the Tromsø neighbourhood across the bridge: a residential district on the eastern shore of the island of Kvaløya, linked to the city centre on Tromsøya by the Sandnessund Bridge. Until that bridge opened, this was farmland, a handful of farms strung along the shoreline. Since then it has grown fast into a lively suburb with schools, kindergartens, shops and restaurants, and the houses have spread so far south-west that they now run without a break into the next settlement, Kaldfjord.

What makes the place unusual is its name. The area takes it from the old farm Sletta, but the postal service, wary of confusion with another Sletta in Balsfjord, coined a new name instead and put island and farm together in one word: Kvaløysletta. The county road to Karlsøy branches off here, so the neighbourhood is also where the road onwards across the island begins.

Slaktarhaugen is the local summit, and the sound and the bridge that changed everything are never far away. For anyone from Kvaløysletta, that crossing and that hill are the lines worth wearing.
