Battle of the Bzura

Kutno lies just twenty kilometres north-west of the geographical centre of Poland, and the town has always made the most of being in the middle. It sits on the western edge of the Kutno plain, beside the Ochnia, a small tributary of the Bzura, in the part of the country with the lowest rainfall and remarkably few thunderstorms.

Its position is the whole story. Kutno stands where the historic lands of Greater Poland, Kuyavia, Masovia and Łęczyca meet, and where the Warsaw – Poznań – Berlin line crosses the line from Łódź to Toruń; in the 18th century the Royal Route from Warsaw to Poznań and Dresden ran through here as well. In 1939 the fields around the town saw the Battle of the Bzura. Today the Pałac Saski houses the town museum, the Ratusz stands at the centre, and every year Kutno holds its Rose Festival. It is also home to the European Little League Baseball Center.

However far the trains take you, the junction always brings you back to the same station, the same square and the same wide, open fields.
