Kristiansand takes its name from the sand it was built on. King Christian IV founded the town on a sandy headland and decreed that the place on 'Sanden' should be called Christians Sand; centuries of spelling reform later, it became Kristiansand, usually written with an S after it so the post does not end up in Kristiansund in the north.
The town sits on the southern coast of Norway, along the Skagerrak, and for centuries that position made it a military stronghold, first as a fortress town of Denmark-Norway and later as a garrison town. Christiansholm festning still stands by the harbour, Bystranda, the town beach, lies right in Kvadraturen, the old core, and Posebyen keeps an older Kristiansand alive. Ferries connect it to Denmark, and the railway sets off from here along the coast. Summers bring the tourists, the zoo and amusement park just east of town, and long days at Hamresanden.
On the map you can find the streets you grew up in, whether that was Grim, Lund, Vågsbygd or Oddernes, and trace your way back down Markens Street to the sea.
