Two towns in one
Lublin Upland
Historic synagogues
Have you ever walked the whole length of Urzędowska, the dead-straight street that ties Kraśnik's two halves together? Kraśnik is a town of two parts set among the hills of the Lublin Upland: Kraśnik Lubelski, the old town spread along both banks of the Wyżnica, and Kraśnik Fabryczny a few kilometres to the north-west, built before the Second World War around a state ammunition factory in the forest between Kraśnik and Urzędów. Western Roztocze begins just beyond the edge of town.
There is a particular kind of loyalty in a place like this, where everyone knows which half they belong to. Old Kraśnik holds the long history: it stood on the merchant road from Silesia to Kyiv, a parish church of Saint Paul is recorded here early on, and hetman Jan Zamoyski later bought the town. Kościół pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, Mała Synagoga w Kraśniku and the Muzeum Regionalne w Kraśniku keep its many layers. Fabryczny holds the twentieth century: the factory, the blocks of flats and the streets of family houses that grew up around them.
Between the two, at Budzyń, lies the Zalew Kraśnicki reservoir. Whichever end of Urzędowska you grew up on, this map holds both – and the road that joined them.
