About Kraków

Known for

Wawel Hill

Known for

Jagiellonian University

Known for

Rynek Główny

Kraków began as a fortified settlement on Wawel Hill, and for centuries Polish kings were crowned and laid to rest there, long before the court moved to Warsaw. The Old Town below the hill became one of the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the city still carries itself like a royal capital.

It sits on the Vistula, where the Kraków Gate meets the uplands of the Jura and the foothills of the Western Beskids, so the mountains and the Jura are only a weekend trip away. Somewhere inside the city limits the twentieth meridian east crosses the fiftieth parallel, the only such crossing in Poland. From the river, the Bazylika archikatedralna Świętych Stanisława i Wacława looks down over the water, and the streets lead up to Rynek Główny, the largest medieval market square in Europe.

For many people Kraków is where adult life started: a room near Collegium Maius, lectures at Jagiellonian University, evenings at the Stary Theatre. Brama Floriańska is the gate everyone has walked through a hundred times without counting, and that is exactly why it belongs on something you wear.
