On Święta góra Chełmska, the hill that has watched over Koszalin since the Middle Ages, Cistercians once looked after a chapel of St Mary; down below, the city goes about its day. Koszalin lies in West Pomerania, twelve kilometres from the Baltic coast, cut through by the little Dzierżęcinka river. It is a city of students, choirs and soldiers in training: home to the Koszalin University of Technology, a Polish Air Force training centre and the Polish Border Guard Academy, and host of an annual festival of choirs from the Polish diaspora.

The Katedra Niepokalanego Poczęcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, a Gothic cathedral, is the seat of the Diocese of Koszalin–Kołobrzeg and the centre of the old town, ringed by the średniowieczne mury obronne. Koszalin was a seaport until the 17th century, one of the main cities of Central Pomerania alongside Kołobrzeg and Słupsk, and from 1950 to 1998 it governed the region as capital of Koszalin Voivodeship. It remains its largest city, with theatres, a philharmonic and the Muzeum w Koszalinie.

Coming home means the road between the Tricity and Szczecin, the cathedral tower in view and the sea only a short ride away.
