Storebæltsbroen
Ferry history
Oldest cinema
For centuries Korsør was where Sjælland ended and the crossing to Fyn began: the railway ferries left for Nyborg, and car ferries sailed from Halsskov until Storebæltsbroen took over. The town takes its name from a cross-shaped seamark that once stood on the beach, and the cross is still in its coat of arms. It also holds a rare distinction, as Korsør Biograf Teater is the oldest cinema in the world still in continuous use.
Korsør sits on the west coast of Sjælland facing Storebælt, split in two by the inlet Korsør Nor: the low-lying old town to the south and Halsskov to the north, where the manor Taarnborg stands. On Korsør Fæstning by the harbour, By og Overfartsmuseet tells the story of the crossing that shaped the town.
If you are a korsoraner, you know the view of the bridge from the harbour by heart, and you know which side of the inlet you belong to. On the map, as in life, the water is never far away.
