Kvarken
On the Replot Bridge, the longest bridge in Finland, traffic crosses from the mainland to the island of Replot and the archipelago beyond, parts of which belong to the Kvarken World Heritage Site. Back on the mainland, Smedsby, the administrative centre, sits just outside Vaasa along road 8. Korsholm wraps right around the city: Vaasa was founded in this parish, and the municipality now surrounds it on every side. Most people here speak Swedish, and in Finnish the municipality is called Mustasaari.
Korsholma castle, built in the Middle Ages, gave the municipality its Swedish name. The Finnish one is older still, meaning a black island, one that looked dark from the sea and has since been joined to the mainland as the land kept rising. Today Edvininpolku and parks such as Kotirannanpuisto give everyday walks their green.
In the village of Toby, Finland's second oldest stone bridge still in use carries the village road across the water, as it has done for generations.
