Kongens Lyngby lies in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, on the line of the old royal road that once linked the capital with Frederiksborg Castle, and beside Mølleåen, the stream whose ford gave the church its spot and whose current turned the town's watermill. Today it is the seat and commercial centre of Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality, reached by S-train on the line towards Hillerød.
Frilandsmuseet, the Open Air Museum, is the place most visitors come for, with more than a hundred historic buildings moved to the site. Closer to the centre, Bondebyen is what remains of the original village, while Brede Værk and Frieboeshvile add museums of their own. The name means "the King's Heather Town", from the days when the land here was crown property. Country houses for Copenhagen's merchants came later, then the railway, then the Technical University of Denmark, which moved out from central Copenhagen. Lyngby Hovedgade, with Magasin du Nord and Lyngby Storcenter, keeps the town busy.
If you studied at DTU, worked your way down the Hovedgade or caught a film at Lyngby Kulturhus before a concert at Templet, this map is yours to trace – every street of it one you have walked.
