Baltic spa town
fishing and yacht port
the lighthouse
Port and spa at once, Kołobrzeg is the Baltic town where summer means beaches, concerts and crowds, and the rest of the year means fishing boats, yachts and patients taking the cure with brine and mud. Its name says it plainly: by the shore. It has been many things over the centuries, a salt-trading stronghold, the seat of one of Poland's oldest dioceses, a Hanseatic town and a fashionable resort.
The town lies on the south coast of the Baltic, where the Parsęta reaches the Pomeranian Bay, midway along the coast between the mouths of the Oder and the Vistula. Much of it sits on low, damp ground behind the coastal dunes, which is why the dunes are protected so carefully. The port at the river mouth handles cargo, passengers, fishing and yachts, and Molo Kołobrzeg carries walkers out over the water. Muzeum Oręża Polskiego and Baszta Lontowa recall a town that was fought over and rebuilt after the war.
