Geografisk Have

Kolding lies at the head of Kolding Fjord in south-east Jutland, in a valley shaped by ice and meltwater at the end of the last ice age. The old centre sits at the bottom, the town climbs the slopes around it, and Kolding Å winds through on its way to the fjord. Together with Fredericia and Vejle it forms the Triangle Region.

Ask people from Kolding what they think of first, and many will name Koldinghus, the castle on Slotsbanken that was the last royal residence in Jutland. Others remember walks in Geografisk Have, where trees and plants are arranged by the parts of the world they come from, or the chairs at Trapholt Museet. The name itself means the cold river, and locals keep a fine distinction: a koldinger is born and raised here, while anyone who lives in the town is a koldingenser.

Whichever you are, the picture is the same: Koldinghus standing above the river, on the hill that has guarded the town since the Middle Ages.
