Half-timbered houses
Køge Torv
Harbour
Where else does the way to the children's library run through one of the oldest dated half-timbered houses in Denmark? In Køge, the house on Kirkestræde is part of the library, and it sets the tone for a town whose old centre of half-timbered houses around Køge Torv is its great attraction. Køge became a market town in the Middle Ages and was an important merchant town where Køge Å meets the sea at the head of Køge Bugt.
Køge Museum fills an old merchant's house on Nørregade, and further down the same street MAPS - Museum of Art in Public Spaces gathers sketches and models for public art, among them the original model for The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. From the harbour, ferries leave for Rønne on Bornholm, and the S-train runs to the capital.
Stand on the square and you have it all in one view: the town hall, Kong Hans' Gård and the tower of Sankt Nicolai Kirke above the rooftops.
