Danish capital
Copenhagen looks across the narrow Øresund strait to Sweden, spread mostly over Zealand with a smaller part on the island of Amager, and tied to Malmö by the Øresund Bridge. It began as a Viking-age fishing village near what is now Gammel Strand, became the capital of Denmark and for a time was the seat of the Kalmar Union, which bound the Nordic kingdoms together.
Amalienborg and Christiansborg Slot, the city's two great palaces, are easy to pick out on the map, with Børsen close by. Squares such as Amagertorv and Gammeltorv knit the old streets together, while Tivoli and Rosenborg draw visitors from all over the world. Today Copenhagen is the country's centre of culture, business and government, a city of bridges, parks, promenades and waterfronts, home to the oldest university in Denmark and ever more closely linked with Malmö across the water.
Whether you were born here or moved in for your studies and never left, you know which bridge you cross on the way home. Now you can point to it.
