Kluczbork is a railway town at heart: the main line from Katowice splits here, one branch heading west to Wrocław and the other north to Poznań, and Parowóz Ty45-149, a steam locomotive kept on show, makes sure nobody forgets it. Its name is a story of its own, starting as Cruceburg, the castle of the cross, after the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star who founded it.
The town lies where the Silesian Lowland meets the Silesian Upland, with the small River Stobrawa running through. Historically part of Lower Silesia, it was later counted as Upper Silesia, and over the centuries it passed between Piast duchies, the Czech Crown and the Habsburgs, keeping a largely Polish-speaking population for much of that time. Fires swept through it more than once, and today the Muzeum im. Jana Dzierżona looks after the town's memory. Colourful murals, from Mural Baba Jagi to Mural Bocian, have brought new life to its walls.
When the train slows into Kluczbork, people who grew up here know they are home.
