Nysa Kłodzka river
In the middle of the Kłodzko Valley, on the Nysa Kłodzka – the Eastern Neisse – and beneath the Góry Bardzkie, Kłodzko gathers the valley's rivers and roads into one town. It is among the oldest towns in Poland and the main town of the area: its commercial centre, an important transport node and the place people from the surrounding valley come to for school, shopping and the train.
Its position has always defined it. For centuries Kłodzko sat between Bohemia and Silesia, belonging to one and then the other, and its name still has Czech and German twins: Kladsko and Glatz. The Twierdza Kłodzko crowns the Forteczna Góra above the old town, the Fort Owczy guards another hill, the Muzeum Ziemi Kłodzkiej tells the story of the valley, and below them the Młynówka splits from the river to turn the old Piasek suburb into an island.
The town is sometimes called Little Prague, and the fortress on its hill is the silhouette that anyone from here carries along wherever they go – reason enough to wear it.
