What links Finland's best-known symphonic metal band with the country's moonshine legends? Kitee, a small town in North Karelia. Every founding member of Nightwish came from here, and the band's story has its own museum, A Nightwish Story. The town has long been nicknamed Finland's moonshine city, a reputation built on pontikka distilled both legally and otherwise.
Kitee lies south of Joensuu in lake country, with more than a quarter of the municipality under water and Orivesi and Karjalan Pyhäjärvi reaching into it. Its neighbours are Parikkala, Rääkkylä, Savonlinna and Tohmajärvi. Sport here means pesäpallo, Finland's own cousin of baseball, and Kiteen Pallo -90 plays in the top division, Superpesis, at Shore Field. Older stories are kept at Kiteen kotiseutumuseo.
