Chromium mine
Kemi is known for its SnowCastle, the largest snow castle in the world, rebuilt every winter to a new design and usually raised in the inner harbour. The rest of the year the town gets on with work: two big paper and pulp mills, and the only chromium mine in Europe, which feeds the ferrochrome plant in neighbouring Tornio. Kemi was founded by imperial decree because it lay close to a deepwater port, and the sea still sets the pace here at the mouth of the Kemijoki. Inside Kemin jalokivigalleria, the gemstone gallery, sits a model of the Crown of Finland alongside replicas of royal regalia from across Europe.
The town remembers harder times too. In the Lapland War, German troops blew up the Kemijoki bridges and took civilians hostage here; they were released unharmed near Rovaniemi. Before the icebreaker Urho came into service, the harbour could be locked in ice from December to April. Kemin historiallinen museo keeps those stories.
In Meripuisto, one of the town's oldest parks, a smoke cabin, a stone labyrinth, old storehouses and the former town hall stand together by the sea.
