Øresund coastline
From Amager Strandpark the view runs out over the Øresund, the strait that separates Zealand from Sweden, and the planes of Copenhagen Airport are never far from sight. Kastrup sits right here on the east coast of Amager, in Tårnby Municipality: a suburb of Copenhagen with apartment blocks and harbour facilities where the island meets the Sound. The Øresund Motorway passes on its way to the Øresund Bridge, and the M2 metro line crosses it on a bridge into Kastrup Station.
Many people know the name before they know the place, from a departures board or a boarding pass. Those who live here know it differently: Kastrup Fort and the Kastrupgårdsamlingen museum, the former manor house of Kastrupgård, Kastrup Church, and Travbaneparken, the park that was once the Amager speedway stadium. The harbour itself began as a landing for chalk shipped over from Saltholm, and lime works, brickmaking, faience and glassmaking followed.
So whether you arrive on the train from the airport or walk home along the shore, Kastrup is where the journey ends and home begins again.
