Statute of Kalisz

Outside the Teatr im. Wojciecha Bogusławskiego, Kalisz feels like a city that knows exactly who it is. It is one of the oldest cities in Poland and one of the two traditional capitals of Greater Poland, alongside Poznań. Piast dukes ruled a separate duchy from here, medieval monarchs were buried here, and in 1264 Bolesław the Pious issued the Statute of Kalisz, a rare protection for Jews at a time of persecution in Western Europe. The Bazylika Kolegiacka Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny and the Rezerwat archeologiczny Zawodzie keep that long memory close.

Kalisz lies in central Poland on the Prosna river, in the southeastern part of Greater Poland, and is the second-largest city in the Greater Poland Voivodeship. It forms a conurbation with Ostrów Wielkopolski and Nowe Skalmierzyce, and it is the cultural, educational and administrative centre for the east and south of the region, as well as the seat of the Diocese of Kalisz. Since the 19th century it has been the heart of an industrial district.

Wherever you live now, if Kalisz is where you started, this is a quiet way of saying so.
