Farmland

On Borgberget above Dalkarby lies one of the six prehistoric hill forts of Åland, a refuge where people withdrew when enemies came. Jomala's name is the old Finno-Ugric word for god, and the parish was one of the first places where the Christian church took root in Finland. A Viking-age hoard found here even held Arab coins.

The church of St. Olav in the village of Prästgården is the oldest surviving church in Finland, its tall tower once a landmark for sailors. Beside it stand memorials to the Ålanders who emigrated and to the sailors lost at sea, Julius Sundblom, the King of Åland, is buried in its churchyard, and behind it a large burial ground reaches back to the Iron Age. Medeltida källare, a medieval cellar, is another trace of those centuries.

Belonging here means a maypole at Midsummer, a harvest festival in September, windmills such as the one on Norrgård farm in Björsby, and, from the top of Ingbybergens Utsiktstorn, flat fertile farmland stretching out between groves of oak, ash and elm.
