Glassblowing tradition
Jevnaker is known for glass. Hadeland Glassverk has been making it here since the eighteenth century and still produces crystal, drawing so many visitors that it ranks as the third most popular tourist attraction in Norway. Glassblowing runs so deep in the municipality that its coat of arms shows three silver glasses on a red field, the red chosen for the colour of glass while it is still hot. A second works, Randsfjord Glassverk, stood at Toso before it closed.
Kistefos tells the other half of the industrial story. The old Kistefos Træsliberi, a wood-pulp mill, is now Kistefosmuseet, an industrial museum with a remarkable art collection. Around it lies the land that gave the place its name: Jevnaker comes from the old farm Jafnakr, Old Norse for the even or flat field, where the first church was built.
The village sits at the southern end of Randsfjorden, east of where the Randselva leaves the lake, in the old region of Hadeland. Come back to the glow of the glassworks and the long lake reaching north, and you know you are home.
