Church of Peace
Piast duchy capital
medieval town plan
Do you know that your town once had its own duchy? From 1274 to 1392 Jawor was the capital of a principality ruled by a local line of the Piast dynasty, the south-westernmost duchy of medieval Poland, and one of the main centres of weaving in Silesia.
Kościół Pokoju, the Church of Peace, is the landmark that puts Jawor on the world map: a Historic Monument of Poland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Close by stand the Zamek Piastowski, the Ratusz w Jaworze and Kościół pw. Świętej Barbary, one of the two oldest churches in town, all within a medieval street plan that has survived largely intact. The Muzeum Regionalne w Jaworze reaches back further still, to settlers of the Neolithic and the Lusatian culture. The town's name comes from the sycamore maple, and the Nysa Szalona, the Raging Nysa, flows right through it.
It is the kind of place where history sits alongside ordinary life, with granite quarries on the horizon and the Pomnikowa Aleja Dębowa for a Sunday walk. If you are from Jawor, carry its story with you.
