Railway station
Kärkölä's centre
Lake Valkjärvi
Järvelä sits on the railway line between Lahti and Riihimäki, at the point where main road 54 crosses regional road 295, and every commuter train on that stretch stops at its station. It is the largest village in Kärkölä and the municipality's administrative centre, and in the statistics it takes in Kärkölä's old church village as well.
Geographically, Järvelä belongs to Päijät-Häme, close enough to Lahti for a daily commute yet with its own centre. The village grew along the tracks, and the essentials gather there: a grocery shop, a pharmacy, a bakery café, a bank, a post office, an Alko store and Järvelän Kino, the local cinema. The primary school, library, kindergarten, youth centre, health centre and indoor swimming pool make it the place where most of Kärkölä's everyday life takes place. Kärkölä High School closed in 2015 for lack of students, so older pupils now travel to Oitti in Hausjärvi.
What brings people back is simpler: a summer afternoon at Valkjärven uimaranta, a coffee at the bakery, the train slowing into the familiar platform. Step off there, and Järvelä feels like home again.
