Jarocin grew up where the trade route from Wrocław to Toruń crossed the road from Poznań to Kalisz, on the Kalisz Upland in the south-east of Greater Poland. Its name comes from a man called Jarota, and in the Middle Ages German speakers knew it as Kesselberg.
What makes it unique is the noise it once made. In the 1980s the Jarocin Festival became one of the first rock and punk festivals in the countries of the Warsaw Pact, and the town still honours that era with the Spichlerz Polskiego Rocka and even a monument to the combat boot, the Pomnik glana. Quieter corners balance it out: the Ratusz on the market square, now home to the regional museum, the Pałac Radolińskich, the Park Miejski and the old engine shed of the Muzeum Parowozownia Jarocin. During the Greater Poland Uprising, local insurgents took the barracks and the railway junction days before Poland declared independence.
If you saw your first gig here or simply grew up between the park and the market square, wear Jarocin and let the map do the talking.
