On the ski slope at Himos, a rally car comes flying down a super special stage of Rally Finland, on a hill that the rest of the year belongs to skiers. That is Jämsä at its loudest. Its history runs much deeper: this is the only medieval parish in Central Finland, and the Iron Age hillforts of Pukinvuori and Linnasenvuori show people settled here long before the church records began.
For anyone who grew up here, Jämsä feels like water on every side. Päijänne stretches along the eastern edge of the town, and hundreds of smaller lakes sit between the ridges. Pälämäen kotiseutumuseo keeps the older parish life on show, the Sankaripatsas stands as the local war memorial, and at Halli Airport aircraft are still built and engineered. Jämsänkoski and Kuorevesi have been folded into the town over the years, each keeping its own corner of the map.
And then there is Paperikoneen kivitela, a heavy stone roll from a paper machine, left standing where the mills once set the rhythm of the day.
