Brutalist centre
Communist mayors
Asian district
Twice in the nineteenth century, Paris took a bite out of Ivry-sur-Seine: first when the Farmers-General wall moved outwards in 1818, then in 1860, when about a third of the commune was annexed to form part of the 13th arrondissement. The old hamlet of Chevaleret vanished with it, remembered now only in the name of a Paris street. What remained grew into an industrial town, declined, and has since climbed back.
The place evokes a particular kind of loyalty. Since 1925 every mayor has come from the French Communist Party, only four of them since 1945, and the brutalist renewal of the centre by Jean Renaudie and Renée Gailhoustet in the 1970s gave Ivry a skyline nobody forgets. Paris's main Asian district now spills across the boundary into the northern streets, and the Vietnamese community has been here since the late 1970s.
The Fort d'Ivry on the southern edge, the Orangerie du château d'Ivry and the moulin de la Tour all speak of what came before the concrete, and they are the landmarks that make this map unmistakably Ivry.
