Television headquarters
Île Saint-Germain
Armenian community
Issy-les-Moulineaux faces Boulogne-Billancourt across the Seine, a left-bank town on the main road between Paris and Versailles, with the Île Saint-Germain lying in one arm of the river. Its identity has changed more than most: the old manufacturing base has given way to the Val de Seine business district, home to the headquarters of most of France's major television networks.
Yet the feeling the place leaves is older than its offices. The name recalls a hamlet of water mills, the Battle of Issy was fought here in July 1815 in the last days of the Hundred Days, and the Château d'Issy, once home to the Princes of Conti, was destroyed in 1871. An Armenian community has been part of town life since the 1930s, remembered at the Mémorial du génocide arménien d'Issy-les-Moulineaux, and the Musée de la Carte à Jouer et Galerie d'Histoire de la Ville keeps the local story in one place.
La Tour aux Figures is the landmark that makes the map unmistakably Issy's, and a fine reason to wear it.
