Medieval stone church
Leväluhta burials
Kyrönjoki valley
Beside the Kyrönjoki, the medieval stone church of Isokyrö rises out of open farmland, the oldest mark of authority in a river valley that people have lived in for thousands of years. Bronze Age burial cairns dot the parish, and finds from the area show trade and wealth reaching far beyond Ostrobothnia.
What sets Isokyrö apart is Leväluhta, the largest historical bone find in Finland. Once thought to be a sacrificial spring, it is now understood as a water burial ground, and the genes of the people laid to rest there draw researchers from around the world. The parish is the mother parish of Ostrobothnia, it has sometimes been taken as the model for Pohjola in the Kalevala, and its name pairs "iso", big, with an old Tavastian word for rocky, rugged ground. Today it also has more cars per head than any other municipality in Finland, which says something about life in a farming valley between Vaasa and Seinäjoki.
Isonkyrön kotiseutumuseo keeps the parish's long story together, and Napuen taistelun muistomerkki recalls the Battle of Napue. With those, the stone church and Leväluhta on one map, Isokyrö is a place worth wearing.
