Rocca Sforzesca
gateway to Romagna
Imola stands on the river Santerno and on the old Via Emilia, where the plain meets the first hills of the Apennines. It is traditionally the western gateway to Romagna, though it sits within the Metropolitan City of Bologna.
For many, the name carries the sound of engines. The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari hosts the Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and was once home to the San Marino Grand Prix. The city itself is far older. Sulla founded it as Forum Cornelii, a farming and trading town famous for its ceramics, and the Lombards gave it the name Imola. Lords such as the Alidosi and the Sforza fought over it, and the Rocca Sforzesca still stands from those centuries, along with the Palazzo Tozzoni and the Museo di San Domenico.
Yet ask anyone from here and they will talk just as fondly of the Parco delle Acque Minerali and of Porta Montanara. The circuit may be what the world knows, but the castle, the river and the town around them are home.
