Wielka Żuława island
Iława lies on the shore of Jeziorak, the longest lake in Poland, with the Iławka and the Tynwałd running through town and the island of Wielka Żuława, the largest inland island in the country, inside its own boundaries and linked to it by ferry.
Set in the Iława Lake District, in the old region of Pomesania, the town is ringed to the west and north by a landscape park that belongs to the area known as the Green Lungs of Poland. Moraine hills, forest and a dozen or so smaller lakes surround it, and by way of Jeziorak and the Elbląg Canal you can sail from here all the way to the Baltic. At Lake Silm, trainee skippers and port pilots learn to handle seagoing ships on scale models, and every summer the Old Jazz Meeting “Złota Tarka”, the oldest traditional jazz festival in Europe, earns Iława its title as the summer capital of the genre. Park Deptak Nad Jeziorakiem is where the town meets the water.
Grodzisko Iława-Wielka Żuława, the relics of an Old Prussian stronghold out on the island, is the spot to find on the map: Iława's story began on the lake, and it is still told there.
