About Ibbenbüren

Known for

Coal mining

Known for

Teutoburger Wald

Known for

Heidenturm

Down by the Aasee stand the remnants of the Heidenturm, all that is left of the castle the lords of Ibbenbüren began building from 1150. Around it the town has grown into the largest in the Tecklenburger Land, on the Ibbenbürener Aa at the north-western end of the Teutoburger Wald, with Rheine to the west and Osnabrück to the east.

The Stadtmuseum Ibbenbüren is one place to start, but the town's coal-mining past is easier to spot outdoors. Coal was dug here for generations, and its world is set up around town in tribute: a winding wheel, a coal tub, a mine train, the heavy cutting gear of the seams. The mine and the power station made the name Ibbenbüren known far beyond the region, and the local Platt still has its own word for the place: Ippenbürn.

If you grew up here, the map will put you back on the paths of your childhood: down to the Aasee, up onto the Schafberg, past the mining memorials on the way to school.
