Knud Rasmussen

Hundested sits at the very tip of the Halsnæs peninsula, with the Kattegat to the north and the entrance to Isefjord to the west, while just to the south the narrow Kulhuse Rende leads into Roskilde Fjord. The water around it has shaped the town from the start.

Its position made it a harbour town. The first building here was a house for the local pilots, and a breakwater came next. Lynæs Harbour grew into the most important fishing port on Zealand, before the boats moved to Hundested Harbour. The railway brought the catch within reach of Copenhagen, ferries began running to Rørvig and later to Grenå, and the harbour drew fish auctions, a cannery and the Hundested Motor Factory, whose engines powered Danish fishing boats for generations. A restored engine is on show at Hundestedmotoren. On the hills northeast of the harbour, Knud Rasmussens Hus remembers the polar explorer and his Greenland expeditions, and Lynæs Fort is on the map too.

Grow up here and the map is full of memories: the ferry to Rørvig, the sand sculptures on the quay in summer, the walk out to Knud Rasmussen's house and the cliffs at Spodsbjerg.
