Fishing village

Known for

Øresund coast

In Humlebæk the Øresund lies at the end of every road, and the Coast Line carries you to Copenhagen one way and Helsingør the other. What began as a fishing village on the shore became, once the railway arrived, a town where Old Humlebæk, the fishing hamlet of Sletten and the village of Toelt slowly grew into one another until nobody could say where one stopped.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is the name most outsiders know, and the best known sight in the whole municipality. Locals know the rest as well: Humlebæk Bugt with Bjerre Strand and Babylone Strand, the harbour that was finished after a fortified war harbour was abandoned half built, and Humlebæk Kro, the inn that was granted a royal licence by the king. Long before the museum, Copenhageners came here by steamboat to spend their summers on this coast.

Visitors come for Louisiana and leave again. If you belong here, it is the streets around it that matter, from the harbour up to the station, and those are what a map of Humlebæk on your chest shows.
