Høng means the high place: the name joins an old word for a height with an ending for the home of those who live there. In the nineteenth century this was where Løve Herred, the local district, held its court, and the district judge lived at Odinsgaard. A folk high school moved here from Sæby, and the town has been known for its schools ever since.

The town sits in north-west Zealand, inland between Slagelse and Kalundborg near the island's west coast, and that position made it a railway junction with lines running off in three directions. The tracks to Tølløse and Slagelse are still in use, and Vestsjællands Veterantog keeps its old trains here. The surrounding countryside holds Løve Mølle and ancient sites such as Byhøj, Baunehøi and Stjodshøj, while Finderup Kirke stands in the neighbouring village of Finderup just outside the town. Høng also gave its name to a camembert that became one of the world's biggest brands of mould-ripened cheese, first made in a small dairy here.

Coming back along the line from Slagelse or Tølløse, the station at Høng is where the journey ends: the high place, and home.
