Boatbuilding
Hommersåk sits snug between two mountain ridges at the head of the Riskafjorden, an arm of the Gandsfjorden, with the sea to the north and the island of Uskjo just offshore. People have lived on this sheltered ground since the Stone Age, and a cross found at Frøyland, close to the centre, is among the earliest Christian grave finds in Norway.
What marks Hommersåk out is how the village built itself. When Riska won its own church and parish, the place took off: a mill came first, then herring oil and fertiliser, boatbuilding, furniture and barrels, and textiles. Kverna i Frøylandsbekken and Riska histore- og museumslag keep that working past in view, and the old Riska Church still stands beside the new one.
If you grew up here, the map holds the fast boat to Stavanger, the shops at Bryggen and the climb up Bjøro.
