Storåen

Did you know that the hottest temperature ever recorded in Denmark was measured in Holstebro? It is one of the surprises in a west Jutland town better known for sculpture, theatre and a river running straight through the middle. Holstebro grew up at a ford over Storåen, and later a bridge was built there; the name is tied to that crossing.

Holstebro lies in the north of West Jutland, south-west of Skive and north of Herning, on both banks of Storåen. In the Middle Ages it sat at the crossroads of Hardsyssel, the old district that stretched from Limfjorden to Skjern Å and from the North Sea to the Jutland ridge, which made it a natural market town. Today the pedestrian streets on either side of the river are dotted with outdoor sculptures, among them Kvinde på Kærre, and Holstebro Kunstmuseum, Holstebro Museum and Odin Teatret give the town a cultural life far beyond its size. Holstebro Lystanlæg offers a green pause, and ancient mounds such as Bredhøj lie in the landscape around.

If you grew up here, the map is the river, the gågade and the walk home across the bridge, and no time away changes how well you know them.
