Holbæk Fjord
Ferry to Orø
Musikhus Elværket
Holbæk is known as the harbour town on Holbæk Fjord, the inlet of Isefjord where the ferry leaves for the island of Orø and a large marina lines the water. It is the commercial centre for the north-western part of Region Sjælland, with trains to Roskilde, Kalundborg and Nykøbing Sjælland and buses fanning out across the area. Its story begins with Holbækgaard, a nobleman's farm named in a letter from Bishop Absalon, and with the castle Valdemar the Victorious began here.
What sets Holbæk apart is how closely it lives with the water: even the old town seal shows three trees by the shore. In the early twentieth century the town became a testing ground for Bedre Byggeskik architecture, and today a converted power station, Musikhus Elværket, keeps the concert stage busy. Holbæk Museum and the windmill Søndersted Stubmølle hold onto older times.
Come back along the fjord, see the harbour and Holbæk Bystrand again, and the town closes around you as if you had never been away.
