About Herten

Moated castle

Known for

Halde Hoheward

Known for

Mining heritage

Morning mist hangs over the moat at Schloss Herten, and the red brick of the castle shows through the trees of the Hertener Schlosswald before the rest of the town is properly awake. The castle has stood here since the fourteenth century, with a park around it and a small pavilion known as the Tabakhaus.

The Besucherzentrum Hoheward is the way into Herten's other landmark, the spoil heap of Halde Hoheward, which rises above the Emscherbruch as the highest point in town. It is made from what the coal mines brought up, and from the top you look out over the Ruhr: Recklinghausen to the east, Gelsenkirchen to the west, Marl and Herne at either end. Woods, wetlands and nature reserves such as Kellergatt fill the gaps between the old mining districts, and in the north-west the old village of Westerholt keeps its half-timbered houses around its castle.

If you grew up walking the castle woods or climbing the Halde on a clear evening, this map is yours to take wherever you go.
