Did you grow up with the heath on every side and a packed ice rink on a Saturday night? Then Herning needs no introduction. This is the town that began as a trading post for the farmers clearing the moorland, grew on wool and textiles, and still answers to the old, half-joking name for the people of the heath: uldjyder, the wool Jutlanders.

Herning sits in the middle of Jutland, the main town of its municipality in the Central Denmark Region, with Tjørring, Snejbjerg, Hammerum and Gjellerup grown into it. Messecenter Herning, the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, fills up with trade fairs, while FC Midtjylland and Herning Blue Fox fill the stands. Ingvar Cronhammar's sculpture Elia rises near the art museum, and the old Herningsholm estate is open to anyone who wants to see where the town started.
