Kronborg
Hamlet
Sound Dues
Helsingør is the town of Kronborg, the castle William Shakespeare chose as the setting for Hamlet, which is why English readers have long known it as Elsinore. The town as it stands today was founded in the 1420s by Eric of Pomerania, who introduced the Sound Dues: every ship passing through the Øresund had to stop here and pay a toll to the Danish Crown. With that money the castle Krogen was built on the tip of Zealand, and Frederik II later rebuilt it and renamed it Kronborg.
Arriving on the ferry from Helsingborg, barely four kilometres across the strait, the castle on its point is what stays in the mind, and the town still feels shaped by the water. Helsingør Bymuseum, Skibsklarerergaarden and M/S Museet for Søfart tell the story of the toll years and the ships, while Marienlyst Slot and Kongenshave offer a quieter walk.
However far you travel, coming back over the Øresund and seeing Kronborg at the water's edge is the moment Helsingør says welcome home.
